Inkjet Photo Printers
Towards the end of April the Canon Pixma MX860 really started to pick up some momentum, and we expect this all-in-one to lead the charge this month. The Canon MX860 features print, copy, scan and fax modes, as well as an Auto-Duplex ADF (Double-sided Automatic Document Feeder) and Wireless/Ethernet connectivity so the whole home or office can print to one machine without fighting over the USB cable! This great value unit also boasts 9600 x 2400 DPI optical print resolution, 2400 x 4800 DPI scan resolution, as well as direct from camera and memory card printing. At $199 ($100 below RRP) these little multifunctions are practically getting up and walking out of the door!
Our suppliers are also listing stock of the hot-out-of-the-oven Canon Pixma MX870 but just quietly, you'd be coughing up an extra $40 for a machine that's practically identical to the MX860. The only discernable difference is a slightly faster print speed (the MX870 prints colour images at 6.1 IPM, as opposed to the MX860's 5.6 IPM, according the good people at Canon). The two printers use the same inks, have the same built-in features, and print/scan at the same resolution.
If you're after a great value inkjet printer for text documents and web-prints don't forget to check out the HP DeskJet D2660 Printer! With lightning-fast speeds, and up to 4800 DPI print resolution, this little unit is perfect for home or office printing – and best of all, the price tag is south of $65! The D2660 has been very popular (and with good reason), so get in quick as our supplier is struggling to keep up with demand!

Specialist Printers
In April, Epson's perennial favourite, the Epson Stylus Pro 3880, performed well with users stepping into the A2 market. The feature-packed Canon iPF5100 and iPF6100 also continued to dominate with professional users, thanks to their twelve colour printing and built-in colour calibration.
Never the type to rest on our laurels, the staff at Hot are now keeping an ear to the ground in anticipation for Canons new Image Prograf iPF6300, iPF6350 and iPF8300 – which look set to take professional photo printing by storm very soon. Stay tuned!

Projectors
Data Projectors
Introducing the latest and greatest from Sanyo - the Sanyo PLC-XU116. This is probably the most feature packed portable projector on the market today! Continuing on from the PLC-XU115, the XU116 offer outstanding, industry leading brightness of 4500 lumens in a portable projector. All the usual features like XGA resolution, small, lightweight and it comes standard with a carry bag. The thing that really separates the XU116 from all others is the fact that it comes with inorganic LCD panels. So there is no chance of the panels fading or degrading over time. This is almost a necessity when you are driving a huge 4500 lumens through these panels.
This little pocket rocket comes equipped with enhanced network functions like high-speed wireless LAN IEEE802.11n (WiFi N) compatible with Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS). Its compact and light weight, and can offer vertical 360° projection. Set up is a breeze as the Sanyo PLC XU116 automatically detects its positioning angle and corrects the image distortion as well as detecting the input signal. The projector is capable of projecting image data saved on a USB memory device, not requiring a personal computer for presentations on the go. To cap it all off, it comes with a wide range zoom of 1.6 - which is greater than most of what the competition offer. All in all, this looks to be the pack leader in portable projectors for 2010. Nothing else seems to come close.
Home Cinema Projectors
The Sanyo Z3000 is currently the best value for money projector in the 'premium end' of the market. It sells for less than its two main competitors, the Epson TW-4500 and Panasonic AE-4000. It is feature packed with a full 1920 x 1080p HD resolution, 2x optical zoom, inorganic LCD panels and the list goes on...
It offers increased smoothness in videos due to doubled frame rate from 60 frames/second to 120 frames/second using interpolation frame generation technology from built-in super-fast image processing LSI. Watch a fast moving scene and you will be impressed. When you compare it to a model without the frame interpolation, its like chalk and cheese.
Black levels are fantastic. It handles the shadow details very well. Especially noticeable for example when someone is wearing a black suit, you can clearly see the different black levels. Its so super quiet at only 19dB, you don't even know its switched on! It also has the auto lens dust cover, a couple of HDMI ver 1.3 inputs, all the usual standard features you would expect on a premium level 1080p home theatre projector.
Sanyo clearly back there product with full confidence. This is evident when it comes to warranty. As standard (providing you purchase local stock from approved dealers like Hot), you get a full 3 year warranty on the projector and a 3 year warranty on the lamp! Now that is unbeatable.

Flatbed, Film and Document Scanners
Flatbed & Film Scanning
Another tax time special available up until the end of June is from Microtek. Microtek are offering 10% off the purchase price of their two graphic scanners - the Microtek 9800XL and the Microtek 1000XL! If you are scanning reflective documents and also large format x-rays or film then all you need is a Microtek 9800XL with a 9800XL transparency adapter. If you want to scan smaller 35mm negatives or slides, then the Microtek 1000XL is the scanner for you. The reason being is that the 1000XL has a higher resolution for the smaller film and also a higher dynamic range. (Please see my explanation of Dynamic range in the March technology update.)
People tend to think that the higher the resolution the better the image. This is not the case! The only reason why you need high resolution is when you are scanning in smaller images like 35mm film and wanting to print the image out at a photo size. Most A4 documents are scanned at 200DPI, if you want to keep the image 1:1 then 300DPI is the norm. To give you an example - if you want to increase the size of a 6X4 photo and print it out to A4 size then you would scan at 1200DPI. If you tried this at 300DPI then you would get pixilation occurring on the print (i.e. the small dots or squares that make up the image would be visible). If you wanted to print a 35mm slide out at an A4 size then you would probably scan at 3200DPI to get the best quality print.
Document Scanning
Nothing much has really changed in terms of Document scanning but in near future there will be a new boy in town. Visioneer will be releasing their range of document scanners in Australia over the next few months. Visioneer are well known for producing scanners for other companies so they are highly regarded in the document scanning market. Please keep an eye out on hot.com.au for new releases or read up on the Visioneer official website.
