Digital SLR Buying Guide

Camera Tips

Digital Camera Tips

  • Let it be
If you're not sure what you're doing with the settings - let the camera stay on automatic.
  • Save the juice
Turn the screen or camera off if you're not going to be using it for a while. This makes sure you always have enough battery to take the perfect shot when the moment arises.
  • Stock up on memory
You can easily replace memory cards on the go, so feel free to add a few to your camera case so you can always take the shots you need. If you're buying large memory cards, sometimes it might be a fair bit cheaper to buy two of the same size memory card than one double the size - although you will have to switch them over when the first one is full.

Digital Camera Update
March 2010 Technology Update

Touch technology seems to be everywhere these days. It is like a little bit of the future has finally arrived and we can enjoy some of the technology we'd been promised years ago. Need proof? The Canon IXUS 200IS is a great little 12.MP digital camera that's compact and feature packed with facial recognition technology, intelligent auto-focusing and the standard stuff like red-eye reduction. But what really separates it apart is the thing that you look at each and every day – a beautiful, colour-rich 3" LCD screen that is also a touch screen.

That's right; you'll be pinching your fingers across the big screen to be zooming out in no time. It kind of reminds me of the disruptive technology we saw from the old Sharp ViewCam when it introduced a bright LCD screen to video cameras – and made it a central feature in the mid '90s. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes other camera manufacturers to catch up and start adding touch screen LCD displays in their premium offerings. We’ve got Canon's latest pocket rocket in the full variety of colours – including the Purple IXUS 200IS and the not-quite-gold Brown Canon IXUS 200IS – great technology in a great package at a blockbuster price.

If you're a bit of a photography pro, you'll most likely be after a digital SLR camera to get more control over the photo process. And well we've slashed the price on the Canon 5D Mark II body - offering an expanded ISO range from 50 to 25,600 at a massive 21.1 megapixels - at a rock bottom price!
