Canon CS9000F Review "..But any of these moderately priced units have the horsepower to make nice images. And the CanoScan 9000F has the highest resolution and nicest looking box of the bunch.." Source

"..This scanner picks up things on my photos that i can hardly see with the my own eyes. I thought i had had some other good scanners in the past, but this scanner puts them to shame - NO COMPARISON! I use it for my professional scanning needs and also my family can use it. It is exceptional. Although i use other professional software with this scanner, the standard software which comes in the box is pretty good too.."

Epson V700 Flatbed Scanner vs. Canon CS9000 Review

Let's start by saying the Epson V700 is one hell of a scanner, and it seems to be the one all other scanners are judged by.

There are many reviews on the Epson Perfection V700 and almost all sing its praises. Rather than simply agreeing with them (which we do by the way), we thought about the logical alternative for people that don't want to spend that sort of money - yet expect exceptional results.

Let's review the main features of the Canon CS9000 vs. Epson V700.

Our Comments
High-resolution Optical scanning up to 9600 x 9600dpi

Win to Canon. The first number is the important one, and it means the CS9000 has much higher OPTICAL dpi - which is better for film/slides.

6400 x 9600dpi (Super Resolution Lens)
FARE Level 3 (Film automatic retouching and enhancement) Backlight correction, Dust and scratch removal, Fading correction, Grain correct.

Similar. Both automatically retouch images.

Digital Ice Technologies (Image Correction and Enhancement)

For advance dust and scratch removal (Not available when using Film Area Guide)
Continuous scanning of up to 12 frames of 35mm filmstrip or 4 mounted slides.
120 format film: max 6 x 22cm (6 x 4.5", 6 x 6", 6 x 7", 6 x 9", and 6 x 12" film strip only)
The Epson wins here with more film scanning options.
35mm strip x 24 frames strip,
35mm slide x 12 frames,
6cm x 22cm medium format (120/220) x 2 frames,
4" x 5" x 2 frames

8" x 10" Transparency with Film Area Guide
7 one touch buttons allowing you to quickly create a multiple-page PDF file optimized for your originals, as well as copy, scan or e-mail images quickly and easily.
Canon wins if you like a button for each job.
1 Push Button

Stand-Alone Application and Scan to File Feature
White LED scanning for high brightness scanning.

All things being equal, the main light source on the Canon should last longer. LEDs last longer than cold cathode lamps (Basically small fluorescent lamps) also "...LED illumination is brighter than fluorescents... making it easier to "see" shadow detail..." (Review link below)

White cold cathode fluorescent lamp IR LED
Instant warm up allows operation virtually the moment the scanner is turned on. Ultra fast book scanning in 7 seconds. Preview 3s.
Speed is also dependant on settings selected and the type/speed of connection as well as your PCs processing speed. The Canon is faster especially if you consider no warm up time.
Waiting time while the scanner calibrates the lamp which changes with age, 11 Seconds book scan. 35mm @ 2400dpi = 47s.
USB 2.0 Hi-Speed interface for fast data transfer.
If you have FireWire, it will be faster on large files (say 30mb plus) than USB 2.0.
USB 1.0, USB 2.0 and FireWire interfaces.
Operating Environment

Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP/2000
Mac OS X v10.4.11 to 10.6.x (USB 2.0)
Operating Systems
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition / XP Professional / 2000 Professional / XP Professional x64 Edition / Mac OS X 10.2.7 or later

Review Quotes
"...Our experience with the Epson Perfection V700 has been a happy one. It's fast. But it also delivers one of the highest quality captures we've seen in a flatbed..."
"...We were surprised by how well our slides were captured with detail in both the highlights and shadows ."

"...Our reservations start with the need for the height adjusters. We just don't like that approach -- or the need for it. We'd much prefer being able to adjust focus, as you can with a film scanner..."
"...Canon's scanning driver and application. It's one of the best scanning applications we've used. What we appreciate most is the clarity of its workflow decisions and how easy it is to find the settings you need to configure... Even if you know nothing about scanning, this software makes it easy to get good results..."

"...it handled everything we threw at it. Which defines state of the art and explains why we've had no problem recommending it to anyone who has asked what's the best scanner to buy..."

Summary

Both scanners have pluses and minuses; and you will have to make judgments about which features you really need. For example, if you want to scan film occasionally, but also need a scanner to convert to PDF and office use, the Canon CS9000 is the easier way to go.

If you're scanning 1000's of slides you'd choose the Epson V700 as it can handle more slides per scan - regardless of the scanning time (you'd be doing other things).

If you want more than a cheap scanner, both options offer a big step up in performance. For value you can make a good argument for the Canon CS9000F as you could buy it and a colour laser printer for the same money as the V700 alone. The Canon also has the highest resolution, not that you really need it, plus a more modern and brighter light source which should last longer. On the other hand the Epson V700 does the best scans and can scan more slides at the one time & larger format film. The V700 has the edge in small scale 3D scanning too, for items like coins, jewelery etc.

The Epson V700 Scanner is the winner in terms of sensitivity and maximum scanning production power.
